We read and discuss in school libraries about matters important to teenagers

01.11.2022 - 30.06.2023 , completed project
project targeted at Libraries School
The aim of the project was to promote reading among young people (12-18 years old) through reading campaigns - designed and implemented with the participation of young people. The project was implemented in schools in Warsaw.

Project results

As part of the project, we held training sessions for school librarians, during which we showed how to attractively explore the reading needs of young people and what the current international guidelines are for organising the work of school libraries.

A key stage of the project was the organisation of reading campaigns in schools. These were designed and implemented by librarians with the active participation of young people recruited for this purpose. Each campaign focused on topics that were relevant to the pupils of a particular school and gave them the opportunity to express their thoughts and opinions through discussions and debates.

As part of the project, experts in areas that the pupils considered relevant (e.g. psychologists, motivational speakers, graphic designers, etc.) were invited to the schools, which further enriched their reading experience.

One of the unique aspects of the project was its emphasis on pupils' autonomous action. In the first stage, the young leaders involved in the project carried out a diagnosis among their peers, adapting its form to the possibilities and needs from each school.

Subsequently, pupils were given the opportunity to select books, which were then purchased for their school libraries. The lists of items were consulted with the students, ensuring that the books on the shelves were those that teenagers actually enjoyed reading.

The approach we took in the project not only increased library resources, but also gave students a sense of empowerment and influence over their learning environment, and helped them build connections with their peers and spend time creatively.
