Libraries Spaces for cultural, social and civic activities

Libraries Spaces for cultural, social and civic activities

The library - a place for everyone

We support librarians and local communities in activities that help turning libraries into a so-called ‘third place’, i.e. an important space - alongside home and workplace - for development, relaxation, knowledge and experience exchange.

At the same time, we emphasise the traditional function of libraries - to provide reliable, up-to-date knowledge and information, to prevent misinformation and fake news, and to promote reading for pleasure.

In our activities, we benefit from the fact that public libraries have unique characteristics such as:
  • Reliability - As a place of knowledge, the library can provide residents with the knowledge they need to engage in social and civic activities, but also better achieve personal goals,
  • Openness - The library is a public and inclusive space, belonging to all residents, not excluding or singling out any social groups,
  • Non-for profit character - Public libraries, as non-commercial spaces, can serve all residents, independent of their material status.

In our work with librarians, we refer to the vision of the public library promoted by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

What do we do?

Young people in libraries. We translate our many years of experience working with young people into creating an attractive offer for young people in public institutions. We encourage librarians to take an innovative approach to reading development by involving young people in the design of the library space, co-creating the book collection, implementing events for local residents, etc.

Volunteering in libraries. Only a few libraries in Poland have developed volunteering, while according to IFLA, volunteering is among the 8 most important criteria for a professional public library! We help libraries develop the kind of volunteering that generates many benefits for their institutions.

Opening libraries to the local community. We help libraries to diagnose the cultural and social potential of local residents and develop an adequate and attractive offer. Since 2021, we have been providing substantive support as part of the National Readership Development Programme in Poland. As part of these activities, we have provided training and tutoring to almost 200 public libraries across Poland.

Civic education in libraries. We help libraries create offerings through which users gain knowledge about democratic mechanisms, deepen their understanding of local and global public affairs and discuss and plan social action together.

School libraries. We value school libraries as important spaces for media education, the development of critical information literacy skills, and countering misinformation. We also see school libraries as a place for children and young people to play, relax, discuss and broaden their interests in a friendly, judgement-free atmosphere.
